The road to the World Warrior Tournament has officially begun. Paramount Pictures finally unleashed the fury at the 2025 Game Awards, offering audiences their first real taste of the live-action Street Fighter reboot. While the studio recently dropped a massive lineup of character posters revealing the full ensemble, we have been focusing our attention today on the reveal of Callina Liang as Chun-Li. Judging by the new footage, that focus is well-placed, as the legendary fighter appears to be the engine driving this new story.
Taking the franchise back to a gritty 1993 setting, the film seems to be stepping away from pure fantasy in favor of a harder-hitting martial arts vibe. The narrative centers on Callina Liang’s mysterious Chun-Li, who serves as the catalyst for the entire film. She is tasked with recruiting estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), dragging them back into combat for a high-stakes tournament. However, this isn’t just a competition; it is described as a deadly conspiracy that will force the trio to battle their own past demons to survive.
The teaser hints at a massive scope, bringing a “battle royale” feel to the screen with a stacked roster of opponents. The film is pulling no punches with its casting, featuring major stars like Jason Momoa as the feral Blanka, 50 Cent as the boxer Balrog, and Cody Rhodes as Guile. The villainous side looks particularly formidable with David Dastmalchian stepping in as M. Bison and Roman Reigns portraying Akuma.
The ensemble is rounded out by a mix of actors and martial artists, including Orville Peck (Vega), Vidyut Jammwal (Dhalsim), Oliver Richters (Zangief), and Hirooki Goto (E. Honda). Fans can also expect to see appearances from Andrew Schulz, Eric André, Mel Jarnson, Rayna Vallandingham, and Alexander Volkanovski.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, this co-production between Legendary and Capcom is aiming to redefine the video game adaptation genre. We have a bit of a wait before the first round officially starts, as the movie is slated to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.
