Kristin Chenoweth, known for originating the role of Glinda in the Broadway production of Wicked, has responded to a petition from the conservative group One Million Moms, which accuses the film adaptation of promoting an “LGBTQ agenda.” Chenoweth, who has openly spoken about her Christian faith, commented on the matter via Instagram.
In her post, Chenoweth noted, “Everyone knows the ‘one million Moms’ are a mere few hundred. Maybe,” adding, “I am a Christian woman [and] originated the role of Glinda and all the silliness that these women spew out of hate. No no no. I can’t help it: I try to love ’em anyways. For they don’t get it. For anyone who wants to see girl power, then go see Wicked. Onstage or in a movie theater.”
Exploring Themes in Wicked
The film adaptation of Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, has sparked discussions among fans about the connection between its lead characters, Glinda and Elphaba. Gregory Maguire, author of the 1995 novel that inspired the musical, recently spoke about their relationship, describing it as intentionally layered. In an interview with Them, Maguire explained, “One could imagine that one of those two young women had felt more than the other and had not wanted to say it.”
Ariana Grande, who portrays Glinda in the film, reflected on the character’s potential layers, telling Gay Times, “Whether it’s romantic or platonic, Glinda might be a little in the closet… It’s just kind of a deep safety within each other. And that’s why [fans] probably ship it.”
Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, shared her own perspective on their bond. “I think Elphie… loves Glinda, I think she loves love,” Erivo said. “And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection the both of them have.”

Since its Broadway debut in 2003, Wicked has been celebrated for its themes of individuality, empowerment, and friendship. The film adaptation, now captivating audiences worldwide, continues to invite viewers into its complex narrative of love and understanding.
Wicked is currently playing in theaters, offering fans an opportunity to revisit the magical world of Oz through a new lens.
