Remembering Benji Gregory: ‘ALF’ Child Star Passes Away at 46

The entertainment community mourns the loss of Benji Gregory, the beloved actor who brought the character of Brian Tanner to life on the classic NBC sitcom “ALF.” Gregory was found deceased on June 13 in his car at a Chase Bank parking lot in Peoria, Arizona. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed his passing, though the cause of death remains undetermined. His service dog, Hans, was also found dead in the vehicle.

Gregory’s sister, Rebecca, shared insights into her brother’s personal struggles, including his battle with severe depression, bipolar disorder, and a debilitating sleep disorder. These conditions underscored the challenges he faced throughout his life, often impacting his well-being.

Benji Gregory gained fame in the 1980s for his role on “ALF,” a show that aired from 1986 to 1990. The series followed the whimsical and often humorous escapades of an alien from the planet Melmac, who crash-lands into the garage of the Tanner family. ALF, an acronym for Alien Life Form, was voiced by Paul Fusco and became a cultural icon for his witty remarks and unconventional love for cats.

The 1980s were a golden era for family sitcoms, with “ALF” standing out as a unique blend of science fiction and comedy. Created by Tom Patchett and Paul Fusco, the show captivated audiences by merging the everyday experiences of suburban life with the fantastical presence of an alien visitor. ALF’s humorous take on human customs and his mischievous behavior provided a fresh perspective on the sitcom genre.
