For the first time, the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics will be broadcast live in movie theaters across the United States. This groundbreaking initiative, starting with the opening ceremony on July 26, will see over 150 IMAX theaters and 160 AMC Theatres nationwide offering a unique viewing experience through August 11.
Innovative Efforts to Revitalize Cinema Attendance
In an effort to attract audiences back to theaters post-pandemic, AMC Theatres has partnered with NBC to bring the Olympics to the big screen. Ryan Noonan, vice president of corporate communications at AMC Theatres, noted the inspiration behind this venture stemmed from the popularity of watch parties during the last Summer Olympics. He mentioned, “We observed significant interest in community gatherings and group watch parties, which showcased a collective enthusiasm for the Games.”
Comprehensive Coverage Details
The Olympic opening ceremony will be broadcast live at select IMAX theaters starting at 1:30 p.m. ET on July 26. Following this, AMC Theatres will provide daily live coverage of various events, running four hours per screening. Sports featured will include basketball, swimming, volleyball, and track and field. While theater locations and ticket prices are still to be announced, the anticipation for this unique experience is high.
Enhancing the Viewing Experience
This initiative aims to create a communal and immersive atmosphere for sports fans, offering an enhanced viewing experience. By providing live coverage in theaters, AMC and NBC hope to foster a sense of community and excitement among Olympic enthusiasts.
