After 6 successful seasons, CBS has announced that their hit comedy series ‘Young Sheldon’ will be coming to an end after its upcoming 7th season.
According to the network, the final season will consist of 14 episodes and conclude with a special one-hour series finale airing on May 16, 2024. This news is not entirely surprising, as the show’s current season 7 renewal was part of a 3-year pickup made in 2021.
‘Young Sheldon’ premiered in 2017 as a spinoff and prequel to the hugely popular ‘The Big Bang Theory’. Centered around a young Sheldon Cooper growing up in Texas, the show allowed fans to see the origins of the iconic character originally played by Jim Parsons on ‘The Big Bang Theory’.
Over its run, ‘Young Sheldon’ consistently ranked as CBS’s number 1 comedy and drew in millions of viewers each week. The series gave us a look at Sheldon’s unique childhood genius as well as his warm, often hilarious family dynamic with characters played by Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts and others.
CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach praised the show, saying “As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, ‘Young Sheldon’ proved lightning can strike twice…It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start.”
The series finale will bring Sheldon Cooper’s origin story to a close after 14 seasons total between ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Young Sheldon’. Showrunner Steve Holland said “Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience… we’re excited to share this final season with you.”
While fans will certainly be sad to see Sheldon and the Coopers go, they can look forward to a memorable final season when ‘Young Sheldon’ returns this February on CBS.
