The film adaptation of the popular video game, Five Nights at Freddy’s, has made an impressive mark on the entertainment industry with a global box office haul of $132.7 million. This remarkable feat has earned it the title of the biggest horror film opening of 2023, as well as the largest global opening in the history of Blumhouse Productions.
Adding to its list of accomplishments, Five Nights at Freddy’s has also set a new record on the streaming platform Peacock, becoming the most-watched film or series within its first five days of release on October 27. This achievement places it ahead of other popular titles such as Halloween Ends and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
A significant achievement in the film industry, Five Nights at Freddy’s represents a milestone as the best opening weekend for a horror film directed by a woman, with Emma Tammi at the helm. This accomplishment further highlights the growing presence and impact of female directors in the industry.
The movie follows the story of Mike, portrayed by Josh Hutcherson, a young man facing financial difficulties while caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby, played by Piper Rubio. In a bid to provide for himself and Abby, Mike accepts a job as a night security guard at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where he encounters supernatural entities with the help of a local police officer, played by Elizabeth Lail.
Moreover, in the U.S., Five Nights at Freddy’s has become the second-biggest opening weekend for a film based on a video game, following The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
