SAG-AFTRA and Studios Inch Closer to a Deal Amidst AI Discussions

There seemed to be continued optimism but still a word of caution, the ongoing strike by actors might be seeing a potential resolution in the near future. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, expressed in an interview with Deadline that the recent discussions with studios have been “productive.” While he remains hopeful, he also emphasized that there are still significant issues to address before finalizing any deal.

A key point of contention in the negotiations appears to be the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Crabtree-Ireland highlighted the importance of AI in the ongoing talks, indicating that reaching a consensus on AI-related matters is pivotal for the successful conclusion of the negotiations.

Over the weekend, representatives from both sides worked diligently to make headway. Despite the rigorous discussions, Crabtree-Ireland clarified that they are not merely at the stage of “dotting I’s and crossing T’s.” The discussions, though intense, have been constructive, and the negotiator remains “cautiously optimistic” about the progress.

When probed about the revenue sharing proposal, Crabtree-Ireland shifted the focus to AI, underscoring its significance in the current discussions. He stated, “AI is really important in this negotiation, it has been since day one. That is an area that we are particularly focused on right now. Because without bridging some key gaps in AI, we won’t be able to reach a deal.”

While there’s hope that a deal could be reached soon, Crabtree-Ireland acknowledges the unpredictability of the situation, dependent on the responses from the companies. However, he affirmed the commitment of SAG-AFTRA to continue negotiations until an agreement is secured.

Today, both SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are working separately, with plans to discuss scheduling later. Additionally, a call to action was issued by the Fran Drescher-led organization, urging actors to join the picket lines and make their voices heard.
