Paul Reubens, the comedic actor behind the madcap character Pee-wee Herman, has died at the age of 70. Reubens crafted an enduring comedic legacy with his portrayal of the quirky man-child Pee-wee Herman in stage shows, films, and television programs.

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” read a statement posted on Reubens’ official Facebook page. “Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Reubens created and starred as the Pee-wee Herman character in the late 1970s, bringing him to life on stage, television, and film. Pee-wee Herman first appeared in a late night stage show in Los Angeles before Reubens landed a role hosting a Saturday morning children’s program, The Pee-wee Herman Show. With his trademark grey suit, red bow tie, and high-pitched voice, Pee-wee Herman quickly became a sensation with both kids and adults.

Reubens went on to star as Pee-wee in the popular films Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Pee-wee’s Big Top. He crafted a unique comedic persona that was both innocent and subversive. Though the character was aimed at children, it incorporated ironic humor and double entendres that adults could appreciate.

While he never matched the success of Pee-wee Herman again, Reubens continued to act in films and television shows for decades after. His death at age 70 marks the end of an era and an influential comedic legacy. Reubens brought joy and laughs to millions through his beloved character Pee-wee Herman.
