Filming for the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel kicked off earlier this year, giving us a first look at rising star Jenna Ortega as Lydia Deetz’s daughter. However, production is now on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that started in July 2023.
In photos from the set, Ortega embodied a fittingly darker, gothic vibe for her character. She was seen wearing a wedding dress paired with a leather jacket and combat boots, seemingly perfect for the Beetlejuice universe.
The sequel is directed by Tim Burton, who helmed the original 1988 cult classic. Stars like Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara are slated to reprise their roles alongside new cast members including Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci.
Ortega landed this anticipated dark role fresh off her acclaimed performance as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s hit series Wednesday. Fans are eager to see her take on another iconically goth character once production resumes after the strike.
There’s no definitive release date yet for the Beetlejuice sequel given the production delay caused by the strike. But with Burton as director and Ortega in the lead role, expectations remain high for this horror comedy follow-up whenever filming is able to restart.
