“Get Ready for More Suspense: ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel in the Works with Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.”
The iconic 90s slasher franchise, I Know What You Did Last Summer, is set to return with a new sequel and a talented team at the helm. Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., stars of the original 1997 film, are in negotiations to reprise their roles. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote Thor: Love and Thunder and directed Netflix’s “Do Revenge”, will be directing this latest addition to the franchise.
According to sources, the project is still in its early stages of development, and talent deals have yet to be fully finalized. The original film, written by Kevin Williamson, the scribe behind Scream, followed four friends who are hunted down by a murderer after covering up a hit-and-run that resulted in someone’s death. The film starred Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr., and grossed $125 million at the box office, remaining at the top spot for three consecutive weeks. The movie also earned nominations at several awards shows, including the MTV Movie Awards and the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.
The franchise has seen two sequels in the past, with Hewitt and Prinze reprising their roles in the first follow-up, and a completely new cast in the third installment. A streaming series was also produced for Amazon, premiering in 2021. The films and series are based on the young-adult suspense novel of the same name by Lois Duncan, published in 1973.
The return of I Know What You Did Last Summer comes as the Scream franchise continues to thrive at Paramount, with a mix of old and new characters populating the 2022 feature and the upcoming Scream 6. The latest sequel from Sony is sure to bring back all the suspense and thrill that made the original so successful.
Deadline was the first to report the news of this exciting new project, and fans of the franchise can look forward to another chapter in the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy.
