Great American Family is bringing a fresh adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel, “Little Women,” to the screen with their new film, “A Little Women’s Christmas.” As first reported by Variety, this contemporary retelling will premiere during the holiday season.
The film features Jillian Murray as Jo March, Trevor Donovan as Friedrich “Fritz” Baehr, Laura Osnes as Beth March, Jen Lilley as Meg March, Jesse Hutch as John Brooke, and Julia Reilly as Amy March. Legendary singer Gladys Knight will also star in the movie and perform her original Christmas song, “Joy.”
“A Little Women’s Christmas” is part of Great American Family’s fourth annual “Great American Christmas” lineup, which includes various holiday films like “Aurora Christmas,” “A Christmas Less Traveled,” “Love at the Kettle,” “My Grown-Up Christmas Wish,” “A Royal Christmas Ball,” and “A Vintage Christmas.”
Bill Abbott, President and CEO of Great American Media, highlighted the ensemble cast and praised the adaptation for capturing the essence of Alcott’s classic story, which focuses on the dreams and ambitions of young women.
Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” published in 1868, remains a literary classic. The novel, set in post-Civil War America, follows the lives of the four March sisters—Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy—as they grow up and chase their dreams. Alcott’s semi-autobiographical narrative offers a nuanced look at the challenges and triumphs faced by young women in the 19th century.
Directed by Brandon Clark and written by Dione Sheehan and Taylor Bird, the film includes executive producers Jesse Hutch, Brandon Clark, Brian Bird, Tai Truesdell, Darin Chavez, Brian Williams, Charly White, Lori Overholt, William McDowell, and Joyce Miller Roy. The movie is produced by Rodney Eldredge, True Brand Entertainment, Third Coast Film, and Empress of Soul Productions.
“Little Women” has seen numerous adaptations over the years. Katharine Hepburn starred in the 1933 sound film, while Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Leigh brought the story to color in 1949, earning an Academy Award. The 1994 adaptation featured Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, and Susan Sarandon, receiving critical acclaim and three Oscar nominations. Recent adaptations include the 2017 TV series with Maya Hawke and Greta Gerwig’s 2019 film, which was a box-office hit and received six Academy Award nominations.
“A Little Women’s Christmas” is scheduled to air during the “Great American Christmas” lineup. This modern retelling aims to bring a heartwarming twist to the classic tale.
