The CW network has announced that it will be the new home for ‘The Chosen’, a series based on the life and teachings of Jesus. The series was created, directed, and produced by Dallas Jenkins and provides an intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings, set against the backdrop of Jewish oppression in first-century Israel.
The series, which is planned to run for seven seasons, has so far produced three seasons with a fourth currently in production. Jonathan Roumie plays the role of Jesus, and Yasmine al-Bustami, known from NCIS: Hawai’i, co-stars as Rahmah, a vintner who becomes one of the women helping Jesus’ ministry.
The CW plans to air the first three seasons consecutively, starting on Sunday, July 16 at 8/7c, with the Season 3 finale airing on Christmas Eve. As a result, the previously planned ‘I Am’ documentary series will be postponed to Q1 2024.
Brad Schwartz, CW entertainment president, expressed his enthusiasm for the series, stating that ‘The Chosen’ tells a historically significant story in a captivating, dramatic, and premium way. He believes that the show, which has already deeply connected with viewers around the world, will expand its audience even further on The CW.
‘The Chosen’ was originally developed as a crowdsourcing project on the Angel Studios app and has reportedly reached over 110 million viewers in 175 countries around the world. There are plans to make the series available in 600 languages.
