If you’re a fan of the classic movie “Grease,” then you’re in for a treat with the prequel TV series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” on Paramount+. The show introduces a fresh new cast of characters that set the stage for the eventual reign of beloved characters like Frenchy and Rizzo from the original film.

The prequel series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” may not spotlight characters from the original 1978 film like Frenchy or Rizzo, but it does introduce a fresh new cast of characters that set the stage for their impending reign on Rydell High. The stars of the show, including Marisa Davila as the geeky creator of the Pink Ladies, Tricia Fukuhara as a boy-hating fashionista, and Cheyenne Isabel Wells as a character whose image has been tarnished after hooking up with a teacher, shine with their standout performances. Meanwhile, Ari Notartomaso’s portrayal of Cynthia, who exudes what the casting directors call “butch energy,” is a significant representation of the LGBTQ community. The casting team was determined to find someone who was openly queer and LGBTQ to play the role of Cynthia, and Notartomaso’s impressive talent and unique energy made them the perfect fit for the part.

The casting directors of “Pink Ladies,” Leigh Ann Smith and Conrad Woolfe of Indigo Casting, credit showrunner Annabel Oakes’ clear vision for the show’s success. Oakes had a deep understanding of the world of “Grease” and had done extensive research on what a real 1950s high school looked like, going above and beyond to ensure authenticity.

The casting team put a strong emphasis on finding actors who could embody the essence of the iconic character Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing in the original movie. They were looking for actors who could bring that same “Big Grease Energy” to the new Pink Ladies characters.
