It’s official: the post-apocalyptic drama “The Last of Us” has been renewed for a second season by HBO. The show, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, adapts the main events of the 2013 video game of the same name.
In “The Last of Us,” twenty years after a fungal plague has ravaged the globe, Joel (Pascal) is tasked by a rebel group with smuggling out a young girl, Ellie (Ramsey), who is miraculously immune to the fungal brain infection and may be the key to cracking a vaccine. The unlikely pair is forced to traverse what’s left of America, dodging the mutated Infected, as well as human raiders, slavers, and other unfriendly survivors.
Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the series, has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of the character. The series writers and executive producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have indicated that they plan to adapt the events of the second video game, 2020’s “The Last of Us Part II,” should the show get more seasons. With the renewal of the show, it’s clear that we haven’t heard the last of “The Last of Us” and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie.
The show premiered on January 15th and was watched by 4.7 million viewers across linear TV and HBO Max streaming. By the end of the week, the number rose to 18 million and the premiere episode has now surpassed 22 million viewers domestically, by HBO’s estimates.
With such strong ratings, it’s no surprise that the show has been renewed for a second season. Congratulations to Bella Ramsey and the entire “The Last of Us” team on their continued success. Fans can look forward to seeing more of Ellie’s journey in the upcoming season.
