Disney Channel’s hit musical adaptation of Freaky Friday premiered earlier this month. The movie features an opening song written by the star of the DCOM Cozi Zuehlsdorff. In an interview with Young Hollywood Cozi revealed that when she was given the opportunity to write a song for the movie the producers were looking for something inspired by Paramore. Cozi has been a songwriter for a long time and has been featured on many EDM tracks. She reveals that when she booked the role in Freaky Friday she started pitching a lot of her original music.

“The opportunity to write the opening song [What It’s Like to Be Me] didn’t come until a couple months after we wrapped,” Cozi told Young Hollywood.  “It was a huge surprise and they said we want a song that’s Paramore meets the go-gos or the bangles”.  “It’s funny writing for a Disney movie because the parameters are very specific’ adds Cozi.

Cozi shared details about the specific guidelines she was given for the song. Disney wanted a song that was very “angsty and rocker but also has a positive message.” Cozi compared the experience to writing an essay.

This Small Behind The Scenes Revelation From Cozi Zuehlsdorff Shows The Example She Was For God on Set of “Freaky Friday”

Published

Cozi Zuehlsdorff

Cozi Zuehlsdorff is a 20-year-old actress who recently starred in Disney Channel’s musical adaptation of “Freaky Friday”. Cozi is a Christian who we know through our friend Brennley Brown is someone who lives out her faith every day by being an example and a light for Jesus. Even on the set of “Freaky Friday” as evident by the behind the scenes fact Cozi shared on Twitter during the premiere broadcast on August 10.

Cozi reveals that during one of the musical numbers at the beginning of the film there is a camera shot that shows her and the actor who portrays her little brother {Jason Maybaum) fighting as seen through a window. Cozi points out that we couldn’t actually hear what they were shouting at each other. It turns out that the two were shouting “I love you” at each other during that shot.

“The minute @JasonMaybaum and I are seen (but not heard) fighting through the glass, we stop pretending to be mad and just are screaming “I LOVE YOU” to each other” Cozi tweeted.

Disney Channel’s Musical Take on “Freaky Friday” Is Full of Heart

Disney Channel premiered its latest original movie a musical adaptation of “Freaky Friday” on August 10 and it delivered with powerful and emotional moments enhanced by the songs featured in the made for TV presentation. History shows us that the concept has been done a few times and while many are quick to compare this latest adaptation to the much more familiar 2003 feature film lets be clear this new version was not a reboot but instead a take on the musical adaptation.

Heidi Blickenstaff who had the role of “Katherine” in the original stage production was cast to reprise her role as the mother “Katherine” in this new retelling while Cozi Zoulsdorff portrayed the daughter “Ellie“. While this could be considered by many Cozi’s “big break” the 20-year-old actress is no stranger to Disney fans. She had a regular role on the Disney XD series “Mighty Med” as well as several other appearances on  Disney series including “Liv and Maddie”, “KC Undercover” and more. Cozi is also known for starring in the “Dolphin Tale” films.

Highlights of the new Disney Channel DCOM were no doubt the musical numbers where mother and daughter switch bodies and again when they switch back at the end of the film. These transitions were made more meaningful thanks to the addition of songs that convey the feelings of each character. Including the film’s opening song “What It’s Like to Be Me” which was co-written by Cozi Zoulsdorff.

Listen to Cozi Zoulsdorff sing “What It’s Like To Be Me”:

Watch the first switch scene below:

The storyline from here on is full of heart and soul searching as both mother and daughter learn to better understand each other as they face struggles and realize that neither one truly understands what they are going through. “Katherine” (Heidi Blickenstaff)  is a caterer who is determined to prepare food for her own upcoming wedding while “Ellie” (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) is a 16-year-old teenager trying to navigate through high school life.

Without giving away too much the scene near the end of the film might make you tear up just a little bit as the two switch back to their own bodies. The moment is moving but the lyrics to the song they both sing to each other underscores the overall message of the story.

Again, I want to emphasize this was not a reboot or a remake but rather a musical version that should stand on its own as an entertaining and meaningful TV movie that highlights the bond between a mother and her daughter. It features catchy songs and has a lot of heart.

Freaky Friday: Brennley Brown Can’t Wait For Her Friend’s Disney Channel Movie

Published

Brennley Brown is like the rest of us! The singer and “Voice” finalist tweeted support for her friend Cozi Zuehlsdorff who will star in the upcoming Disney Channel original movie “Freaky Friday” premiering August 10. The new DCOM will be based on the musical adaptation of the popular franchise. The most popular version is, of course, the 2003 film adaptation starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

This might be Cozi’s breakout role but she is no stranger to the Disney family. She played Jordan on the Disney XD series “Mighty Med” and has been featured on the Disney Jr. animated series “Sofia The First“.

Brennley Brown who has also had a recurring role on “Sofia The First” couldn’t help but share her excitement for her friend. In a tweet Saturday Brennley wrote:

“Seriously you guys my most dearest and precious friend @CoziZuehlsdorff is a STAR! I’m so happy that the world will soon know it!

Fun fact Cozi actually wrote the opening song for the modern retelling of “Freaky Friday”. She will star opposite Heidi Blickenstaff.
