It is being announced Via Entertainment Weekly that a dirty dancing remake is happening in the form of a musical staring Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens, My sisters keeper and little Miss Sunshine) as Baby.
The original 1987 drama stared the late great Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray. Executive producers for the reboot include Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games) and Eleanor Bergstein, who also wrote the screenplay for the original movie. Jessica Sharzer (The L Word) will write the adaptation and Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) will direct. The music will be done by Adam Anders and Peer Astrom (Glee) with Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton) as choreographer.
It would seem that musicals are all the rage these days. With last weeks broadcast of the wiz live scoring an astounding 11.5 million viewers with a 3.4 rating in the age demographic of 18-49 it would be silly not to capitalize on this type of market and ABC knows that.
Another interesting fact is that weeks before this announcement was even made is that Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough did the classic dirty dancing number on an episode of Dancing with the Stars. Could this perhaps been ABC’s final push for this project to see the light of day? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, they got the green light and the remake is indeed happening.
